Diesel engines are used in commercial trucks because they are more fuel efficient and durable than the gasoline engines used in automobiles. Although the work done by auto mechanics is similar to the work of diesel mechanics, those going for diesel need specialized training to progress in the field.
The knowledge demands on mechanics are increasing over time. For example, more and more of diesel trucks are being controlled by electronics and microprocessors. New emission standards are requiring the installation of catalytic converters and other emission control systems. Because of this, it's important to find the right type of school for diesel training.
High School Preparation for Diesel Technician
High school students in public schools should take as many courses as possible in automotive repair, electronics, English, and math to prepare for future training. Although high school preparation by itself is not ideal for a career as a diesel technician, many entry level workers gain skills on the job right out of high school. However, with today's complex technologies used in diesel engines, it's best to get additional post-secondary training.
